Increasing Representation in Clinical Research

All people deserve information on and access to clinical research.

I bring a deep commitment to advancing diversity in clinical research by designing and implementing strategies that address root causes of underrepresentation in research. My approach centers on building trust, increasing awareness and accessibility, and empowering individuals to make informed decisions on participation in clinical research.

Through my experience and efforts in this space, I have had the opportunity to create the following impact:

In partnership with the Wake Forest School of Medicine, I directed and led the establishment of a Community Advisory Board that provided critical insight into a clinical research study focused on improving colorectal cancer screening rates in minority populations. Recruited and engaged diverse community stakeholders and facilitated ongoing dialogue over the course of 1 year that translated community input into actionable strategies that enhanced trial design, cultural relevance, and participant engagement.

In partnership with the International Myeloma Foundation, I collaborated to develop a realistic and community-informed implementation plan for a large-scale clinical research study on monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) in the African American community. Provided qualitative data analysis, feasibility recommendations, and culturally grounded community input to ensure the study design reflected real-world conditions and addressed barriers to participation and trust.

With the American Diabetes Association, I've developed culturally tailored education initiatives specially curated for underrepresented communities, fostering trust and increased knowledge about research. Achieved 95% participant satisfaction, with attendees reporting high relevance, clarity, and cultural responsiveness of content. Shifted community perceptions with 89% of participants reporting a more favorable view of clinical trials after attending these educational events.

With Atrium Health Levine Cancer Institute, I supported the development and implementation of the first-ever mobile lung cancer screening unit, a pioneering clinical research initiative aimed at improving early detection among underserved populations. The study demonstrated significant success in reaching high-risk individuals under-represented in lung cancer screening, and has since been scaled nationally and internationally as a best-practice approach to equitable lung cancer screening.

Throughout, I've engaged cross-sector partners to co-design outreach strategies that reflect the values and priorities of underrepresented populations. Built scalable models that integrate health equity principals into educational efforts, enabling sustained impact across populations.
